Inspired by Papo's Spinosaurus figure and the Jurassic Park 3 film, I have decided to do a small sculpture of this dinosaur to add to my collection of ever-growing models and dioramas! I've already started to build an armature for a 17.5 inch long Spinosaurus model maquette. It will be sculpted in a neutral position to start, but I may do different postures for it later on. Roma clay Grade 4 is my choice of clay for this small model as there's a lot of very fine detailing to add and the harder the clay, the better. To soften the clay and make applying to the armature easier, I made myself a miniature oven using an old hair dryer and a pot lined with aluminium baking foil. The nozzle of the hair dryer is mounted into the lid of the pot. This simple piece of equipment works better than I thought it would, so I'm pleased I took the time to make it! I'll be able to get pics up this weekend of my progress. ;D Update! Here's a quick rough in of the body, tail and head. The head is just cast from a Papo model, but I will replace that later with a better sculpt (no limbs yet).
