I had always fancied putting real working rocket engines into the 14" vinyl figure model kit of the Rocketeer. Remember the scene in the movie where Peabody tests the pack on a wooden statue in a field? This is what I wanted to re-create right down to the cable/chain that keeps him from flying off. :cool If I can get it to do this, then maybe I'll release the cable during later launches and see how far it goes! :lol2 I have done some firing tests with rocket motors mounted to a rig to see how long the burn time is, but it seems keeping them stationary like this greatly reduces the time the engine burns. The best I can get is around 2 - 3 seconds, but I know that these rockets last a lot longer if launched properly. Maybe once they're in the jet-pack and flying through the air, they'd perform better? By the way, these particular engines are 15 years old, so they might not be performing as well as they should due to age? :unsure Link to engine firing test video is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6LE6klWXLA

That video was kinda short, but still cool. Wish I could of seen the entire flame though. The best you'd get using the motors you have is 1.8 secs burn time going by the stats on the rocketry website, and I think the legal limit for UK engines are D size. You may want to create the figure with foam as vinyl may be too heavy. If you're going to play with rockets, why not do the Independence space shuttle from the movie 'Armageddon? The bottom of the boosters may need stabilizers though. I love that film and the launch sequence is the best!!!! ;D Here's a movie clip of that awesome scene: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw_PyrsGHuY

Neat scene! I like the film too, but I have so many other projects to complete first before even thinking of doing that shuttle. It's an interesting idea, and would be one of the most achieveable projects I could choose to do. ;D

PLEASE DO THE SHUTTLE! PLEASE PLEASE! ;D ;D That would be awesome if you could get it flying. Maybe do it in the dark? How about doing both of them! The other shuttle is called Freedom I think? How big would you do these if you did do it? ;D I have seen very very big solid rocket motors available, and you can use lots at the same time to get more power. Go here for the details on what's available: www.rocketstore.co.uk ;D You could get hold of a model kit and just scale that up larger for the rocket motors. I think it'd reach a miuch higher altitude if you placed several motors into each booster (e.g. lower, middle and upper stage motors). Here's a plan drawing of both the American and Russian space shuttles:

Yeah, I'd probably just by a kit and make a bigger one from that in balsa, foam and card. ;D A camera in it would be a neat touch! I'd probably go for 'Independence' as the name, 'Freedom' will get my mates associating it with Braveheart! ;D

I saw Braveheart at the cinema and absolutely loved it! ;D As soon as it came out on video, I was in the shops during my lunch break! I got Apollo 13 while I was there too.

Here're some of the rocket engine packs that I have. I fired one off the other day, so I assume they're all good still after all this time. Some are still properly wrapped and untouched from the day I bought them. I have A, B, C & D sizes, with D being by far the most powerful. I remember attaching one to a board in the garden once, and it flipped the board 20 ft across the lawn before ending up in the pond. ;D I think I'd be able to get this size into my rocket pack, but it may have a shorter burn time of just 2 - 3 seconds. Any more progress on the actual rocket backpack? I want to see pics!

Here're the parts I will be casting up for the little figure to wear. These are from an 18 inch vinyl kit, so pretty big. I'm not sure if they will be big enough for my D sized engines, so I may have to just use these as reference and make a slightly larger rocket pack. Attachments:

Do even need to do the helmet? I thought you were making the wooden statue from the Peabody field flight test scene?

Here's the actual miniature figure used in that scene. This was auctioned and made from both wood and resin parts. This is the kind of thing I had in mind for my model, but mine would all be cast in resin. I may have to make the deflector plates with metal though, so they don't burn off. ;D Attachments:

Is this going to be launched in your back garden or what? If so, might want to tie it down like the movie scene, or you'll lose it. I assume you live in a built up area?
