After viewing several documentaries discussing the salvaging and lab analysis of the Titanic's rivets, I have decided to create my own 1/1 scale replica model of one of Titanic's main hull rivets. It'll measure around 3 1/2 inches in length and will finally be cast in resin and painted.
I would like to make it look old and rusty as though it had been recovered from the wreck. Stay tuned for updates on this project!
;D

Was never really into Titanic that much, but as it's one of your projects...I'll keep checking back on this one too. Shame you couldn't make it in metal, more realistic that way.

Well, it will be part metal and part resin. I will mix an iron filler compound into the resin mix to give it a heavy metal feel to it. I then plan on placing it into a container of salty water for a few weeks to bring out the rust. Might look more realistic doing it this way then painting it.

How is this coming along, it's been a few weeks since I last heard about this one? Have you thought about doing a hull plate full of rivets?

I've just taken the rivet out of the water and am leaving it to dry.

Here's a picture of the mold I made from the clay sculpt. I chose Polyester resin mixed with an iron metal filler to cast this piece as the resin seems to allow the iron particles to make contact with the water better and rust up. Attachments:

The rivet is about 4 inches long. Here's the mold with the cast resin setting up. Attachments:

How long does the rusting take to cover the nail? It took years for the Titanic nails to rust, but I guess you won't be doing it that way?

I'll be watching, please post updates of the rusting effect in progress. Will do. For now, here's the nail removed from the mold (before I put it into water in the last post). Attachments:

Love the sculpted texture you put onto it. How did you do that?
