Here're some of the mold parts for my amber rock chunks as seen at the beginning of Jurassic Park in the amber mine. Does anyone have an idea to how the rock skin effect was created on the original props? I'm not sure if a powdered mineral was glued on somehow, or it was just painted? You can also see in the pic a couple of test eggs for the Hammond cane I'm working on. ;D

Loving those amber eggs...very nice. ;D Are those amber rocks going to have real insects in them too..like the mosquitos in the Hammond cane from Jurassic Park? It would be a good idea to put other bugs inside also as happens in real amber. I had 2 pieces of genuine amber that had 3 spiders, two gnats and 4 ants. It was literally packed!!!

Yes, I will be putting all kinds of insects in these. But, like the cane... I will go for mosquitos and craneflies mainly. ;D

What kind of mosquito was in the Jurassic Park props? I mean both the Hammond cane and the amber rocks in the mine at the beginning. Also, there's a scene where you see a scientist during the Mr DNA video drilling into some amber and extracting DNA. Is this a mosquito too?

I'm not certain of the one in the amber rock in the mine scene (probably a mosquito)? The bugs in the Mr DNA film and Hammond cane seem to be the Elephant Mosquito- Toxorhynchites rutilus of eastern United States and Mexico. Male Toxorhynchites rutilus:

UGGHHH! That looks real gross. Is that really what's in the Jurassic Park amber? I thought they were bigger? How big is this mosquito then?

This mosquito has a wingspan of 12mm and a body length of 7mm. I have also read on at least 2 websites the wingspan could be as much as 1 inch, but I'm not sure about that. There's so much info stating it's only a max of 12mm, but having said this,.. the bug in Hammond's cane (which is an Elephant mosquito) looks like it could have a winspan of 1" as it's absolutely huge! Good news on small mosquitoes though! As well as having a supplier online, I have just fished out a load of moquito larvae from the garden pond which I now have in a container. Once these hatch out, they'll be right in the resin amber eggs... hahahaha! ;D I'd probably have to freeze them or something first to knock them out. Just one of these critters is capable of producing thousands of eggs so I'll never ever run out! Here's the stage they're at now: Another few days and I'll see how they look in a resin egg! ;D I'm not sure what species this is, but I'll assume it's the common house mosquito measuring approx 5 - 6mm body length: I could do some amber chunks literally packed with these! ;D

How many of these are you going to do? If you're going to sell them I don't want to miss out, but I will have to wait until the end of the year before I can afford something like this. I'm assuming these would be very expensive to buy going by all the work you're putting into it?

If you can get real big mosquitoes like in Jurassic Park, I may be interested too, but I'd prefer to see some pictures of a finished piece first. How long do you think until you're done?

Some great news! I think I may have sorted myself out with a supplier of the mosquito species Toxorhynchites rutilus - Elephant mosquito as used in the Jurassic Park props and Mr dna animation sequence! I'll update this thread when I know the full details, but it seems like I'm really getting somewhere now. ;D Here's a pic of the bug: I'm not sure when I'll complete my first rock amber, I need to receive my first batch of mosquitoes first. Once I do, maybe a couple of weeks after that I'll have a finished rock to show off! ;D

Those amber chunks look amazing! How did you do them? Is the mineral you added rock dust, and did you just line the inside of the mould with it or glue it onto the resin amber afterwards? Maybe it's paint? Did you create a mould for each of those pieces? Do tell! I see you've got lots of craneflies in them. You seem to have an unlimited supply! ;D
